SIGNS

Smile Pharmacy 스마일 약국

Well, it's Monday evening here. Mondays are usually the longest of the week, just like anywhere I guess, so here's a sign that's nice to see at the Smile Pharmacy. (pronounced Su-ma-il) There are lots of cognates in Korean so if you can read Korean, sometimes you can figure out what the place is or what the sign says. Sometimes if you just pronounce the word in English like 'Smile' you won't be understood, so you have to over-emphasize phonetically in Korean and say 'Su-ma-il'. So as a beginner learning Korean, this can be frustrating. I think anyone who who has tried to learn the language has experienced this. There are many many more of these and I hope to have some more pics soon of these places. But another one I have to mention is "Coca Cola". Peaople usually pronounce it Cola or 'Ko-la' which sounds a lot better than a Coke or "Kuk". So when you are drinking Soju and Coke, you can imagine what it sounds like then!
