Well it's down to the Final 8 and some teams are 'lucky' to be there. It is the Worldcup though and anything can happen. But some of the calls by the refs?? Absolutely terrible and out of control. Paul and I watched the game with Brazil and Ghana and our new expression is "Give him a yellow card ref!"
Let's start with the most recent game. Ghana was very unfortunate to not get the call for Adriano being offside twice before he scored!! And some of the yellow cards the ref handed out were terrible! Ok, ok, maybe some were deserved but it didn't seem he had the game in total control, and what about that tackle Ronaldinho made? Ok he was very sportsmanlike and called the ref over right away but just because he did that he doesn't deserve a yellow card?
Ok, Italy had the better chances in the game against Australia, but giving them a penalty like that in the last second of the game? C'mon referee!!
The game with Korea vs. Switzerland saw a plastic glass dart across the room we were at. The assistant referee raised his flag for offside on the player Frei and then the called was reversed by the ref! That just killed the momemtum for the Korean team, if they had anything left.
Finally, the game with Portugal and Holland. Ok, this might some biased but first of all Figo should have been ejected for headbutting and Robben should have had a penalty for getting booted in the chest while trying to control a ball in the box.
It was a very uncontrolled game by the ref, although he tried to control it by handing out 20 cards!! Some very weak calls.
Nobody's perfect but I honestly think there has been some terrible refereeing in this tournament.
Graham Poll gave 3 yellow cards to a guy from Croatia during the game with Australia and Croatia. When the Aussie player Mark Viduka mentioned to him that he already had two yellows, the ref said to him "Don't tell me how to do my job"!
There's more to come on this topic....
