When I arrived in Korea 7 years ago, I was quite ignorant not knowing the exact situation of the 2 Koreas. Within the first 6 months I witnessed the 1st Reunion of Families in Pyongyang since the Korean War. Some of the families were seperated for almost 50 years! It was a very emotional day and I watched the live coverage all day. So many families were able to see each other, some not even sure what the other family member would look like. It was especially overwhelming for one mother to see her son. After about 10 minutes, she fainted and had to be taken away for treatment.
I guess the Good News coming out of North Korea today is a good start to the 2 Koreas working their way back to becoming one Nation. It will not be an easy process. Every year, the 2 nations become even more seperated by South Korea's advancing technology and constant westernization. Although South Korea is still unknown to much of the world and a lot of it's technology is confused with being Japanese(like Samsung), I am sure that if you travelled across the border to North Korea it would be an eye opener.
According to many South Koreans I've talked to, they are against the re-unification because they are afraid of what their country will turn into. They are worried about their economy dropping and becoming poor. The thing you have to remember about South Korea is that is has built itself up quickly to become as modern as it is today. Since the early 1970s South Korea has developed drastically and it's economy has grown very strong.
I have enjoyed watching the constant improvements. Before the WorldCup in 2002, there were almost no English roadsigns in Ulsan, South Korea. Ulsan was one of the cities to build facilities for the WorldCup and now there are signs in English everywhere.
I think it's a good start anyways and I'm looking forward to having more options to being able to see North Korea.
I for one, am all for the re-unification but to be honest, I'm not sure I want to be around for the final curtain opener.
